Choosing a new monitor means navigating display technologies with different strengths and limitations. Two of the most popular panel types — OLED and IPS — have completely different approaches to creating images on screen. 

The choice between these technologies affects everything from gaming performance to content creation capabilities and even long-term reliability. This guide examines the key differences between OLED and IPS monitors to help you determine which technology better suits your specific needs.

What's an IPS Monitor?

IPS (In-Plane Switching) monitors revolutionised display technology when they first came onto the market. These displays have a backlighting system — liquid crystals are arranged parallel to the surface and shift position when electrical current passes through them. 

This design impacts performance aspects like contrast. Since the backlight remains active even when displaying dark content, it affects how deep blacks appear on the screen.

The technology was an improvement over TN (Twisted Nematic) panels and delivers better display performance. Users can see what’s on their screen from any angle, in the right colour, when compared to older technologies. 

What are OLED Monitors?

Spend time comparing monitors at any display showroom, and the OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) models stand out immediately. Their blacks look genuinely black rather than dark grey.

OLED technology is a fundamentally different approach to image creation. These displays incorporate organic compounds that produce light directly when electrical current passes through them, eliminating the need for separate backlighting systems. 

In OLED displays each pixel works independently. When displaying black they turn off completely producing a true black or absence of colour. This capability delivers different contrast performance than traditional LCD technologies.

IPS vs OLED specs

Choosing between these technologies means understanding how their differences affect your specific needs. Let's explore what sets them apart.

Panel Technology

IPS monitors rely on liquid crystals constantly illuminated from behind. Turn the brightness to zero, and the screen still glows faintly in a dark room. This persistent illumination means black pixels merely block most — but never all — of the backlight.

OLED monitors use pixels that light up individually when electricity passes through them. As mentioned, when showing black, OLED pixels completely shut off. This creates true blacks and eliminates the light bleeding around bright objects against dark backgrounds.

Image Quality and Contrast

Manufacturers measure contrast ratio as the difference between the brightest white and darkest black a screen can produce. IPS displays typically reach 1000:1 to 1500:1 ratios. While respectable, this means blacks look more dark grey than truly black.

OLED technology has very high contrast ratios (around 1,000,000:1) due to perfect black reproduction. This capability creates depth perception improvements in visual content, particularly noticeable in dark scenes. 

Response Time and Gaming Performance

Gamers often notice slight blurring during rapid camera movements on IPS monitors. This results from response time — how quickly pixels change from one colour to another. IPS panels need roughly one to five milliseconds for this transition. Modern gaming displays offer responsive performance suitable for most gamers, with a lesser likelihood of blurring. 

OLED pixels change almost instantaneously. The difference becomes obvious in fast-paced games, where OLED displays maintain crystal-clear images even during frantic action. While this seems a lot faster, users may not perceive real differences outside of specific high-speed competitive scenarios.

HDR Performance

High Dynamic Range content requires displays capable of rendering extreme brightness variations simultaneously. IPS monitors equipped with mini-LED backlighting systems can achieve peak brightness levels up to 1500 nits, which creates impressive highlight performance that is particularly valuable in brightly-lit environments.

OLED monitors reach approximately 1000 nits peak brightness but compensate with perfect black levels. While this creates excellent contrast, OLEDs have limitations in sustained brightness for large bright areas of the screen, typically reaching only 150-250 nits for full-screen white content.

Lifespan

After some time, monitors displaying the same images after a while can become at risk of burnout. This is when static elements remain onscreen for extended periods. IPS technology faces no risk of permanent burn-in regardless of what's displayed.

OLED monitors can develop burn-in after some time. Modern OLEDs include protective features like subtle pixel shifting and automatic brightness adjustment for static elements, but the risk hasn't disappeared entirely. 

Viewing Angles

Both IPS and OLED monitors are easy to view from any angle. The only thing that changes is colour and brightness.

IPS panels support 178° viewing angles, though brightness diminishes slightly at extreme positions.

OLED maintains perfect colour and contrast from virtually any angle. Even when sitting far to the sides, you’ll see identical colours to those directly in front. 

Price 

IPS technology has been around longer, which means there are usually more affordable options across more categories. When comparing monitors with similar specifications (size, resolution, refresh rate), OLED models generally cost more than their IPS counterparts, thanks to their newer technology.
