A lot of obstacles prevent Wi-Fi connectivity to my computers in the other room. Should I get a Ubiquiti Access Point or a Ubiquiti Repeater to remedy this situation?
Both Access Points and Repeaters can improve WI-Fi connectivity issues but in different ways. With a Wi-Fi Access Point, you get to extend your router’s signal using a LAN cable. This solution works well if objects stand in the way of your router’s signal. In contrast, repeaters are used to pass along a router’s wireless signal to other devices that are far away but with no obstacles blocking the way. So, if routing a cable from one room to another is not a problem, get a Ubiquiti Wave 2 Access Point to ensure a stable interruption-free connection between your router and your computers. Only use a repeater to enhance a weak Wi-Fi connection due to distance.
I intend to buy a Ubiquiti MU-MIMO Access Point. Can you explain what the “4x4” specification means?
When shopping for a MU-MIMO Access Point, you may have seen “2x2”, “3x3”, and “4x4” showed somewhere in the product’s name or spec sheet. The first number in each of these spec values means that the item comes with two antennas (regardless of whether they are internal or external. The second number refers to the number of Wi-Fi streams the Access Point creates using beamforming technology. Beamforming technology enables the Access Point to concentrate a transmission beam to a region for better connectivity. Thus, a “2x2” MU-MIMO Access Point or router has two antennas and creates two streams. A “4x4” MU-MIMO MU-MIMO Access Point comes with four antennas and creates four targeted streams.
Which Ubiquiti UniFi Access Point should I buy to share internet access to my LAN two floors up?
It depends on the number of clients. For 192 or fewer clients, a mesh Access Point (AP) is enough. For more clients, one or more ceiling-mounted Ubiquiti APs work best. You may also opt for a Ubiquiti BaseStation which can serve up to 1500 clients.
