What is a Computer Case?

A computer case is vital to your PC build as it houses all your internal computing components (motherboard, graphics card, drives etc.) protecting from elements such as dust and liquid that can damage your PC whilst keeping it cool. These computer cases come in different sizes and designs depending on the purpose of the system, each with their individual purposes and benefits. There are three different sizes of cases available – mini, mid and full but there can be variations to this size such a cube cases. The majority of cases are constructed of aluminium or steel, with some being or containing plastic.

How do I choose a Computer Case?

You should choose your computer case depending on your computing needs and taste in design. If you do not require too many bays and features, and want to save space, a mini-tower case such as Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX could be an appropriate choice.  However, if you are looking to purchase a smaller case, then you should check that your motherboard is compatible, and that it will be able to cater to your future expansions and needs.  The mid-tower cases are the most popular size, as they provide enough internal room without compromising too much physical space. The next level is a full tower case which can provide plenty of room for expandability and access but are generally more expensive than the others.

Other specifications you might want to consider include case weight, cooling setup, number of drive bays, I/O (input/output) ports, and mainboard setup.  You can also choose from multiple aesthetic designs, as they can come in a variety of different colours and external features (such as coloured lights).
