If you're keen to play your PC games in a different room from where your gaming PC is located, then a streaming media device could be the solution for you. NVIDIA SHIELD TV offers abilities such as being able to act as a hub for your smart home, streaming PC games from your gaming PC to your TV and also act as a media centre for local and online media playback and streaming. NVIDIA SHIELD TV utilizes the power of the Tegra X1 chip and runs Android out of the box. Android games compatible with Android TV are compatible with the SHIELD TV and SHIELD Controller. The 16GB of on-board storage can be expanded by adding a USB3.0 flash drive. 1. Play PC Games in Another Room

To utilise the power of your gaming PC in a different room (e.g. living room), you will need to have a PC equipped with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics card. You will then need to ensure that both the NVIDIA SHIELD TV and your GeForce GTX equipped gaming PC are connected on the same network. You can connect the SHIELD TV to your network wirelessly, though for the best experience connecting via Gigabit Ethernet is recommended. GameStream supports resolutions up to 4K (3840 x 2160) and HDR. When both your gaming PC and NVIDIA SHIELD TV are connected to the network, you can begin setting up GameStream.

GameStream can be enabled on your SHIELD TV by completing the steps below;

Download and install GeForce Experience on your GeForce GTX equipped PC (download link here). GeForce Experience may already be installed on your PC when NVIDIA GeForce graphics drivers were installed.

Once installed, open GeForce Experience and log in (or create an account if you haven't already).

Then, go settings -> SHIELD and enable GameStream. This ensures your PC is ready for GameStreaming.

On your SHIELD TV open the NVIDIA Games app and click My Library -> Set up GameStream.

A log in prompt will appear – simply sign in using the same details as used in GeForce Experience.

Once logged in, a GameStream tile should now have appeared within My Library. Click this tile to access your games to be streamed from your gaming PC.

2. Play Together Locally

NVIDIA SHIELD TV provides multi-controller support for local multiplayer games along with GameStream. SHIELD TV also supports many other non-SHIELD USB-wired or Bluetooth controllers, though for the best experience it is recommended to use the SHIELD Controller.

3. Smart Home Hub

If you wish to use the SHIELD as a smart home hub, the bundled compact remote features an integrated microphone enabling Voice Search for easy interaction with Google Assistant (not yet available in Australia). The compact remote is useful to interact with Google Assistant if you are too far from the SHIELD TV or wish to not use the game controller. With Google Assistant you can ask questions about the weather, control your media (e.g. Spotify), order Dominos and more. You can also monitor your Nest surveillance cameras and command your smart devices such as your thermostat, lights, speakers and more.

4. Stream Online Films and TV

NVIDIA SHIELD TV supports 4K HDR video output along with Dolby Atmos and DTS-X audio. 4K HDR content can be enjoyed through apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video - of course, non-HDR content is also supported. Apart from the aforementioned media apps, Google Play Movies & TV, YouTube, Crunchyroll, Sling etc along with local TV network streaming services are also available such as tenplay, 9now, SBSondemand, 7plus, ABCiview and more. Note that using the integrated Chromecast may be required for some local TV networks. Using the SHIELD Controller, YouTube 360-degree videos can be played and interacted with on the NVIDIA SHIELD TV.

5. Cast from Your Mobile Devices

Need not worry if a media app is not supported by Android TV as the NVIDIA SHIELD TV features integrated Google Cast. This allows you to Cast media from your smartphone or tablet to the SHIELD TV to enjoy on a big screen.

NVIDIA SHIELD TV is available in 2 variants – the cheaper version comes with the SHIELD Console and Remote which is suitable for media consumption while the SHIELD Controller is included with the more expensive variant. If you wish to take advantage of GameStream, Steam Big Picture or to play any type of game on the NVIDIA SHIELD TV, then it is recommended to purchase the variant which includes the SHIELD Controller. A vertical stand is also available if you would like to lessen the footprint of the NVIDIA SHIELD TV console. Additional SHIELD Controllers can be purchased separately enabling you to play games on the SHIELD TV with friends and family.
