What does 2.0, 2.1, 5.1, and 7.1 mean for speakers?

These numbers correspond to audio channels and indicate how many speakers a speaker system has. The first number signifies how many main speakers it has. The number after the decimal refers to whether or not the set comes with a subwoofer. Thus, a 2.0 speaker system comes with two main speakers, while a 2.1 speaker system includes two main speakers and a subwoofer speaker.

What is a soundbar?

A soundbar is a speaker system that typically comes in a thin rectangular or oblong-shaped enclosure. Soundbars are a cost-effective and convenient solution for enjoying more fuller and better audio compared to using a computer monitor's or TV's built-in speakers.

Should I buy a soundbar or surround sound speakers?

It depends on your needs, how large your room is, and your budget. If you want true surround sound and have a large enough room for speaker placement for optimal acoustics, then go for surround sound speakers. That said, surround sound systems are typically smaller and easier to set up and thus are a great option if you're renting and/or living in a small apartment.
